Polaroid’s Mirrorless Android Camera Pulled From Sale After Losing Patent Case With Nikon

Polaroid’s mirrorless camera – the Polaroid iM1836 – is a device that promised much but failed miserably when it came to delivering on those promises. It was at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in January earlier this year that the Polaroid iM1836 was first unveiled to the world. The features onboard the Polaroid iM1836 had been tantalizing even then – a ‘Smart Camera’ powered by Android, coupled with interchangeable lenses. But on closer inspection, the device was found to be a cheap rip-off of Nikon’s 1 Series.  Nikon “negotiated amicably” with Sakar behind the scenes to try to solve this problem outside of court, but the manufacturer would have none of it, and so the Japanese company has been forced to get litigious. A press release by Nikon, attempts to clarify the company’s position on the matter:

“Nikon makes a great effort to create designs that can be differentiated from other companies’ products as well as to strongly deter the imitation of its designs.”

It was no wonder that Nikon took the manufacturer of the Polaroid iM1836 –Sakar – to court on account of a patent infringement lawsuit. The rulings from the US Court are unsurprisingly in favor of Nikon. As a result, Nikon and Sakar have agreed that Sakar “will no longer manufacture, import, advertise, promote, offer for sale, sell, or ship the Polaroid iM1836 digital camera in its present configuration.” The product information page for the device has also been pulled down.
